Obtaining a Work Permit in Vietnam in 2025: What Employers and Foreign Employees Need to Know
Securing a valid work permit is one of the most important steps for foreign professionals looking to build a career in Vietnam. Under Decree No. 219/2025/ND-CP (“Decree 219”), effective from 7 August 2025, the government has streamlined and clarified the procedures for work permits, whichcovers new applications, renewals, and reissuance.
At Alitium, we help investors and employers navigate Vietnam’s labor and compliance framework. Below, we outline the key requirements and processes you need to know when bringing foreign talent into Vietnam in 2025.
What is a Work Permit?
A Work Permit is an official document issued by the Vietnamese authorities. It permits a foreign employee to legally work for a specific employer in Vietnam and serves as proof of their lawful rights under labor law.
Work permits are typically valid for up to 2 years, depending on the employment contract and supporting documents.
Work Permit Application Process (New Permits)
Foreign employees intending to work in Vietnam must follow a structured application process:
Step 1 – Prepare documents
-
-
Application form completed by the employer.
-
Health certificate (valid within 12 months).
-
Passport copy.
-
Criminal record certificate (issued within 6 months).
-
Two photographs (4x6cm, white background).
-
Supporting documents for employment form and qualifications.
-
Step 2 – Recruitment notification
The employer must publish a recruitment notice at least 5 days before submission of the application.
Step 3 – Online submission
Applications are submitted via the National Public Service Portal (dichvucong.gov.vn), 10–60 days before the employee’s start date.
Step 4 – Issuance
The authority processes applications within 10 working days and issues the work permit.
Reissuing a Work Permit
Reissuance applies if the original work permit is lost, damaged, or requires updated information (e.g., name, nationality, or passport number).
Key requirements:
-
Application form, photos, valid passport, and the existing work permit are required.
-
Processing time: 3 working days.
-
The new permit is valid for the remaining period of the original permit.
Renewing a Work Permit
Foreign employees who wish to continue working in Vietnam must renew before the current permit expires.
Step 1 – Prepare documents (similar to a new application, with valid existing work permit).
Step 2 – Recruitment notification (5 days before application).
Step 3 – Online submission via the National Public Service Portal (within 10–45 days before expiry).
Step 4 – Issuance (within 10 working days).
Important: Work permits can only be renewed once, for a maximum of 2 additional years.
Key Takeaways for Employers & Investors
-
Vietnam is a process-driven market: following the timelines and document requirements precisely is critical.
-
Preparation is everything: incomplete or late applications can result in costly delays.
-
Employers should integrate work permit compliance into their HR and governance procedures to avoid disruption.
